But that doesn’t mean that our tried and true social media channels will disappear. What it does mean is that these channels have to stay on top of their game and ensure that they offer what brands and people want today and tomorrow.</p>

<h3>Facebook</h3>
<p>Because it is a media maven. This channel allows brands to target in a way that most other channels cannot yet. It’s because people give so much personal data to Facebook, and therefore Facebook can share this information with brands; you get to know more about your target than you expected to know.</p>
<p>In addition, with the rush of live streaming apps, Facebook is entering that game too. Their current streaming app is in beta, but by early 2016, people, and hopefully brands, will have their hands on it. Why does this matter? Just look at how many people already use Facebook. And with all the targeting, it’s even more intriguing to brands.</p>
<h3>Instagram</h3>
<p>Owned by Facebook, and with the opening of its ad services, Instagram is becoming another hot bed for brands. In addition (like Facebook) Instagram has a habit of releasing apps that can be integrated with its main app – such as the recent Boomerang (GIF maker).</p>
<h3>Periscope</h3>
<p>The app that is used by many consumer brands for live event streaming. From media brands  to fashion brands to publishers, this popular app is owned by Twitter and isn’t going anywhere soon.</p>
<h3>Snapchat</h3>
<p>Through its discovery network, Snapchat has made itself known to brands as more than just another app used by teenagers and millennials. It’s an app that allows brands to reach an audience who is hungry for exclusive cool stuff.</p>
<h3>YouTube</h3>
<p>Just because there are a ton of other video apps out there now, doesn’t mean that YouTube has lost its cred. It is still the #2 search engine on the internet. That says something. From famous YouTubers to thoughtful brand content, YouTube still has a lot to offer brands, especially through its partner and influencer networks.</p>
<p>What new apps will come out in addition to these? I guess we’ll have to see.</p>

<p>Recently we talked about the <a title="Meerkat" href="https://startupfashion.com/bump-social-cred-live-stream-video-app-meerkat" target="_blank">live streaming app, Meerkat</a>…but have you heard of <a title="Periscope" href="https://blog.twitter.com/2015/introducing-periscope" target="_blank">Periscope</a>? It is the latest in the live streaming trend that has appeared and it’s taking the brand marketing world by storm.</p>
<p>The questions we wonder as we evaluate Periscope:</p>
<ul>
<li>Is it a meerkat “killer” ?</li>
<li>Is it better than meerkat?</li>
<li>Which one should I, as a brand marketer – invest my time in?</li>
<li>Do people care?</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Is Periscope a Meerkat Killer: Maybe.</strong></p>
<p>Periscope is a direct competitor and it was put out by Twitter. It allows for seamless integration with the popular social channel and <em>way</em> more brands and marketers have taken advantage. Currently you have  big name early adopters such as Mountain Dew and DKNY and also emerging brand users like <a title="Nearly naked Jewelry" href="http://gonearlynaked.com/blogs/bts/19162275-youre-invited-join-us-bts-of-an-exclusive-boudoir-jewelry-event" target="_blank">Nearly Naked Jewelry</a>, who showed us a Behind the Scenes of a collaborative photo shoot they did with several other brands.</p>
<p><strong>Is it Better? Yes. Why?</strong></p>
<p>First, you can integrate your Twitter list automatically. In addition, Periscope has the ability to save and view videos later. They don’t disappear in that “snapchat” sense as in Meerkat. This allows for viewers who may not have been able to tune in directly during your event to watch a few minutes or hours later (up to 24 hours).</p>

<p>The latest buzz is around<a title="Meerkat app" href="http://meerkatapp.co/" target="_blank"> Meerkat</a> – a somewhat new mobile app, which has hit the streets of SXSW with a storm.</p>
<p><strong>What’s so cool about it?</strong> Meerkat allows you to tweet live video in actual real time. This live stream option is super cool, especially for brands who may not have the ability to partner with the big publishers to do so.</p>
<p>Let’s break down the advantages:</p>
<ul>
<li>It’s a free app to download and use</li>
<li>You can stream live or schedule your video</li>
<li>You can see what people you follow are sharing within the app or on Twitter (or wherever else they have embedded their Twitter feed)</li>
<li>In your dashboard you can see live feeds of folks using the app</li>
<li>You can see who is watching the live stream</li>
<li>You can comment, retweet, and “like” while watching</li>

<p>It’s been a buzz recently over the latest and greatest launch by Snapchat – Snapcash. A way for Snapchat users to send money to friends with a couple clicks of their mobile keyboard. A new competitor to the mobile payment world, specifically for the millennial and generation Z audiences. But will it work?<strong> </strong></p>
<p>There have been many talks about whether it’s safe to use and if the privacy concerns that Snapchat has had are truly over. If you can’t protect the users’ images, how can you protect their cash? Apparently, accordingly to Snapchat, Square is their way to ensure the safety of people’s money and their privacy settings have changed as well.<strong> </strong></p>
<p>I was curious to see how the typical Snapchat user (college kid, uses snapchat multiple times daily, and uses it to communicate more often than text at times) thought about the new Snapcash offering. The results:</p>
<p>Me: Do you trust Snapchat with sending money?<br />
SC User: No.</p>
<p>Me: Why’s that?<br />
SC User: After the recent issues with photos not being safe, the last thing I want is to connect Snapchat with my bank account.</p>
<p>Me: If it was safe, would you consider it?<br />
SC User; No, I use Venmo.</p>
<p>Me: Would you consider switching?<br />
SC User: Not really. Everyone at school uses Venmo. Why would we switch to something we aren’t sure about? Especially when we have something that works?</p>
<p>Although this user was hesitant, I do believe that some Snapchat users will consider taking the plunge and checking it out. More so in cases where it’s easier for them and they already use it so often. For those who use Venmo, and others – it may take more convincing before they change their current user/consumer habits.</p>
<p><strong>But what does this mean for brands? A new opportunity</strong>.</p>
<p>Snapchat has been a place where brands could win with exclusive content, contests, product launches, events, and opportunities. Now it’s a potential opportunity to allow that audience to purchase exclusive products, event access, and more – with the click of a button.</p>

<p><a href="http://snapchat.com/" target="_blank">Snapchat</a>, the mobile visual application that allows for instant consumption of videos and photos has come out with some recent updates.</p>
<p>Although there are fun little things like filters there are two things that stood out to me: (1) applying temperature through Weather Channel data and (2) allowing users to view one snapchat per day more than once (rather than letting it self-destruct).</p>
<p><strong>What this means for consumers:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Like Instagram, consumers can now create more visually appealing content</li>
<li>Consumers can add more context to their snapchats</li>
<li>Consumers can re-watch snapchats that were too quick or too memorable not to watch again</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>What this means for marketers:<br />
</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Snapchats that are about contests, hidden previews, product launches, or special events can be viewed more than once by consumers &#8211; allowing more interactivity and potential word of mouth</li>
<li>Brands can view snapchats submitted by consumers more than once, which allows for easier screenshots to view and assess for winners of contests</li>
<li>Weather.com has already gotten inside Snapchat as a potential partner – which has potentially opened doors for others with context that is fitting for snapchat users</li>
<li>There are more “tools” at consumer and brand disposal for making snapchat content more fun and relevant (filters, speed, temperature, location, etc)</li>
</ul>
